Choosing the course and institution

Student Visa (Vocational Training Student Visa)

Features

This visa allows you to stay in Australia to study a full-time vocational education and training course.

Requirements
  • You might be able to get this visa if you are enrolled as a student in a registered vocational education and training course.
  • Each visa may have different conditions depending on your circumstances such as your country of origin and age.
  • This visa is designed for international students applying to study in Australia and whose main course of study is:
    • a certificate I, II, III and IV (except ELICOS)
    • a VET diploma
    • a VET advanced diploma
    • a vocational graduate certificate or
    • a vocational graduate diploma
  • This visa is for you if you want to do one of the following:
    • apply for your first student visa
    • apply for subsequent student visa
    • apply to join a family member who is in Australia on a student visa.

If you are applying in Australia for this visa, you must either be the current holder of a qualifying visa or have held a certain visa no more than 28 days prior to lodging your application.
With this visa:

  • you can study in Australia
  • eligible dependant family members can accompany you to Australia
  • when you have commenced your course of study in Australia, you can work up to 40 hours per fortnight while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.
  • your family members can work up to 40 hours per fortnight provided you have commenced your course of study in Australia.
  • your partner can study in Australia for up to three months.

Note: If your partner wants to study for more than three months they must apply for their own student visa. The application can be made in Australia.

Higher Education Student Visa

This visa allows you to stay in Australia to study a full-time higher education course.

Streamlined Visa Processing

Streamlined visa processing for this visa is designed for international students applying to study in Australia at a participating university or non-university higher education provider. You may be eligible for streamlined visa processing if your main course of study is a Bachelor degree or a Masters by coursework.

Requirements

This visa is designed for international students applying to study in Australia and whose main course of study is one of the following:

  • Bachelor degree
  • associate degree
  • graduate certificate
  • graduate diploma
  • Masters by coursework
  • Higher Education diploma
  • Higher Education advanced diploma.

Postgraduate Research Sector Visa

Features

This visa allows you to stay in Australia to do postgraduate research.

Streamlined Visa Processing

Streamlined visa processing for this visa is designed for international students applying to study in Australia at a participating university. You may be eligible for streamlined visa processing if your main course of study is a Masters degree by research or a Doctoral degree.

Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if you are enrolled as a student in a registered course for the award of:

  • a masters degree by research
  • a doctoral degree.

This visa is designed for international students who want to study a Masters degree by research or a Doctoral degree in Australia.

Work Visa(Temporary Work -Skilled Visa)

Features

This visa lets a skilled worker travel to Australia to work in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor for up to four years.

Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if:

  • you have been sponsored by an approved business
  • you have the required skills to fill a position nominated by an approved business.

The Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) allows skilled workers to come to Australia and work for an approved business for up to four years.

You must be sponsored by an approved business. A business can sponsor someone for this visa if they cannot find an Australian citizen or permanent resident to do the skilled work.

You can be in or outside Australia when you lodge your application.

This visa allows you to:

  • work in Australia for up to four years
  • bring your family to work or study in Australia
  • travel in and out of Australia as often as you want.

Employer Nomination Scheme

Features

This visa is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers. It allows you to work in Australia under one of three streams:

  • the Temporary Residence Transition stream
  • the Direct Entry stream
  • the Agreement stream.
Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if you:

  • have been nominated by an approved Australian employer
  • are younger than 50 years of age, unless you are exempt
  • meet the skills, qualifications and English language requirements, unless you are exempt
  • apply under the stream for which you were nominated

The Employer Nomination Scheme visa is for skilled workers who want to work in Australia. This visa involves a two-step process, firstly, nomination by an approved Australian employer and then an application under the nominated stream. It is part of the Permanent Employer Sponsored Visa program.

This visa is a permanent residence visa. You can be in or outside Australia when you apply. If you are in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or a bridging visa A, B or C.

The visa has three streams:

  • The Temporary Residence Transition stream is for subclass 457 visa holders who have worked for two years in the same occupation with their nominating employer (who has lodged a valid nomination with us under the Temporary Residence Transition stream), who wants to offer them a permanent position in that occupation.
  • The Direct Entry stream is for:
    • people who have been nominated by their employer under the Direct Entry stream
    • people who have never, or only briefly, worked in Australia
    • temporary residents who do not qualify for the Temporary Residence Transition stream, o
    • people with a nomination lodged with us before 1 July 2012.
  • The Agreement stream is for people sponsored by an employer through a labour agreement.

Skilled Independent Visa

Features

This visa is for points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government.
It allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.

Requirements

You might be eligible to apply for this visa if invited. When we sent your letter of invitation, you must also have:

  • nominated an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • obtained a suitable skills assessment for that occupation
  • not yet turned 50 years of age
  • achieved the score specified in your letter of invitation based on the factors in the points test
  • at least competent English.

The Skilled-Independent visa (subclass 189) is a permanent residence visa for points-tested skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia.

To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through SkillSelect to apply.

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted.

Invitation to apply

You can only apply for this visa if you have been invited to apply for the visa. The invitation will be issued subject to a specified timeframe in which you are told to lodge your application.

The invitation will provide instructions on how you are to lodge your application. You can only apply for this visa online. A personalised link to the online application form is provided with the invitation.

Age: You must be under 50 years of age when you are invited to apply.

English language: The threshold English language requirement is Competent English, which is an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test result showing a minimum score of 6 in each of the four components of the IELTS test or, an Occupational English Test (OET) attaining a score of at least B in each of the four components of an OET as specified by the Minister. For some occupations, the assessing authority may require a higher level of English as part of their skills assessment process.

Skills assessment: Before you receive an invitation, you must have had your skills assessed as suitable for your occupation by an assessing authority for your nominated occupation. You also need to find out if the occupation you have nominated requires you to be registered, licensed, or be a member of a professional or industry organisation.

If your skills assessment was made on the basis of a qualification obtained in Australia while you were the holder of a student visa, the qualification must have been awarded as a result of studying a CRICOS registered course.

This is a permanent residence visa. It lets you and any family members who have also been granted this visa to:

  • stay in Australia indefinitely
  • work and study in Australia
  • enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses
  • apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)
  • sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
  • travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted (after that time, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia).

You must score at least 60 points against points test factors to be eligible to be invited to apply for this visa. If you are invited to apply, you must achieve at least the score specified in your letter of invitation. This information tells you what you can be awarded points for. Skilled Sponsored Visa

Features

This visa is for points-tested skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government agency.
It allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.

Requirements

You might be eligible to apply for this visa if you were invited. When we sent you your letter of invitation, you must also have:

  • nominated an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • obtained a assessment for that occupation
  • not yet turned 50 years of age
  • achieved the score specified in your letter of invitation based on the factors in the points test
  • at least competent English
  • been nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency.

The Skilled Nominated visa is a permanent residence visa for points-test skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia after being nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency.

To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through SkillSelect to apply.

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted.

Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa

Features

This visa allows skilled workers to live and work in specified regional areas in Australia for up to four years.
For the Invited Pathway – Submit an Expression.
For the Extended Stay Pathway – Apply for a Skilled Regional (Provisional) Renewal visa.
For family members of someone who already holds a subclass 489, 475, 487, 495 or 496 – Apply for a Skilled Regional (Provisional) Subsequent Entrant visa

Requirements

Invited Pathway:You might be eligible to apply for this visa if invited. When DIAC sends your letter of invitation, you must also have:

  • been nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area
  • nominated an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupations list
  • a suitable skills assessment for that occupation
  • not yet turned 50 years of age
  • achieved the score specified in your letter of invitiation based on the factors in the points test
  • at least competent English

Extended Stay Pathway :
You can also apply for this visa if you hold a provisional visa in subclass 496, 495, 487 or 475. The Skilled-Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) is for skilled workers and their families to live, work and study in specified regional areas in Australia for four years.

There are two pathways for this visa:

  • the Invited Pathway
  • the Extended Stay Pathway – must hold a provisional visa in subclass 475, 487, 495 or 496.

For family members who are included in your visa application (in either visa pathways), they must be a family member of someone who already holds this visa (subclass 489) or a provisional visa in subclass 475, 487, 495 or 496.

Business Owner Visa (permanent residence visa)

Features

This is a permanent residence visa. You will be able to travel in and out of Australia for five years.

Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if you:

  • hold one of the required provisional business visas
  • managed your business in Australia for the past two years.

A Business Owner visa is for people who own and manage a business in Australia.

This is a permanent residence visa. It lets you and any family members who have also been granted this visa to:

  • stay in Australia indefinitely
  • work and study in Australia
  • enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses
  • apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)
  • sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
  • travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted (after that time, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia).

Investor visa (permanent residence visa)

Features

This visa is a permanent residence visa. You will be able to travel in and out of Australia for five years.

Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if you:

  • hold an Investor (Provisional) (subclass 162) visa
  • have maintained a designated investment of AUD1 500 000 for four years.

The Investor visa allows you to live in Australia if you and your spouse or de facto partner together have held a designated investment in Australia for four years.

Your family can also apply for this visa if you have already been granted it.
It is the second stage of the Investor (Provisional) (subclass 162) visa.
This is a permanent residence visa. It lets you and any family members who have also been granted this visa to:

  • stay in Australia indefinitely
  • work and study in Australia
  • enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses
  • apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)
  • sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
  • travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted (after that time, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia).

Travel Visa (Bridging Visa B – BVB)

Features

This visa allows you to leave and return to Australia while your application for a new substantive visa is being processed

Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if:

  • you are in Australia
  • you already hold a BVA or BVB
  • you have applied for a new substantive visa that can be granted to you while you are in Australia.

A Bridging visa B (BVB) is a temporary visa. It lets you leave and return to Australia while your application for a substantive visa is being processed. If you return to Australia within the specified travel period, you can then remain lawfully in Australia while your substantive visa application is being processed.

A substantive visa is any visa which is not a bridging visa or a criminal justice visa or an enforcement visa. You can hold a substantive visa and a BVB at the same time.

If you still hold a substantive visa that allows you to travel and you believe you can return to Australia before your substantive visa ends, it is your decision whether or not you want to apply for and be granted a BVB before you travel.

If you decide not to get a BVB but use your substantive visa to travel, you will need to contact your case officer as soon as you return to Australia and before your substantive visa ends.

Business Visitor Visa/Tourist Visa (Bridging Visa B – B V B)

Features

This visa lets you visit Australia:

  • to visit or for business purposes
  • for up to three, six or 12 months.

The base application charge for this visa ranges from AUD130 to AUD335.If you hold a certain passport, you might be able to apply for a free or cheaper visa.The eVisitor (subclass 651) visa is free. You must be a passport holder of a certain country.The Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) visa has an AUD20 service charge. You must be a passport holder of a certain country.

Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if you are travelling to Australia:

  • as a visitor
  • for business visitor activities
  • to visit family
  • on a tour with a registered travel agent from the People’s Republic of China.

Only certain passport holders can apply for this visa online. Each visa may have different conditions depending on your circumstances. If you cannot apply online, you can lodge a paper application.

Prospective Marriage Visa

Features

This visa allows people to come to Australia to marry their prospective spouse.

Requirements

You might be able to get this visa if you intend to marry:

  • an Australian citizen
  • an Australian permanent resident
  • an eligible New Zealand citizen.

The Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300) is for people who want to come to Australia to marry their prospective spouse.

It is a temporary visa for nine months. You must be outside Australia when you lodge your application and when the visa is granted. You can have the wedding in any country: the wedding does not need to be in Australia.

This visa allows you to:

  • enter Australia before you marry your prospective spouse
  • travel in and out of Australia as often as you want
  • work in Australia, although some employers might not hire people with temporary visas
  • study in Australia, but with no access to government funding for tertiary study
  • apply for a Partner visa, in Australia, after your marriage.

Partner Visa

Features

This visa allows the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia.

Requirements

To get this visa, you must be married to or in a de facto relationship with an:

  • Australian citizen
  • Australian permanent resident
  • eligible New Zealand citizen.

You must be in Australia when you apply

The temporary Partner visa allows you to live in Australia if you are the spouse or de facto partner of:

  • an Australian citizen
  • an Australian permanent resident
  • an eligible New Zealand citizen.

In some circumstances the visa can be granted where your partner relationship has ended.The temporary Partner visa is the first stage towards a permanent Partner visa. You must be in Australia when you apply and also when this visa is decided.

You lodge one application form for your temporary and permanent visas and pay one application charge. Your application is processed in two stages, about two years apart.

The temporary Partner visa lets you:

  • stay in Australia until a decision is made about your permanent Partner visa
  • work in Australia
  • study in Australia, but with no access to government funding
  • enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses.

You can include your dependent children in your application, but not other dependent relatives (unless you hold or held a Prospective Marriage visa). Dependent applicants must be in Australia when they apply.

If you are later granted a permanent visa, you can:

  • stay in Australia indefinitely
  • work and study in Australia
  • apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)
  • sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
  • receive some social security payments
  • travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted – after that time you will need another visa to enter Australia.
